DEFINITION = It is a viral disease of birds characterized by nodules or warts formation at the featherless part of birds such as comb and wattle and eyelids and corner of mouth of birds and nostrils of birds. Fowlpox is the worldwide disease of poultry . The viruses causing fowlpox are distinct from one another but antigenically similar and possible hosts like chicken and turkeys and quail or canaries and pigeons and many other species of birds.This disease is found in two forms in birds :-
1) Skin form
2) Diptheric or wet form

ETIOLOGY = Fowl pox cause by viruses of the family Poxviridae and the genus Avipoxvirus.

TRANSMISSION =

1) It is transmit by direct contact of birds with each other .

2) By consuming contaminated feed and water by chicken or birds.

3) By eggs of birds or chicken .

4) By skin abrasions or feaces of birds and chicken.

SYMPTOMS = There are two types of symptoms are seen in this disease :-

1) SKIN FORM = Formation of white colour nodules and change into yellow colour .There are five stages of pox lesions are seen and they are :-

a) Roseolar =
In this stage redness of featherless area .

b) Papular stage =
In this stage papules formation on featherless area.

c) Vesicular stage =
In this stage watery fluid in papules is form .

d) Pustular stage =
Thick watery fluid like pus formed in papules.

e) Scab stage =
Scab formation on that area and this stage is responsible for spread of disease .

NOTE = In this form of disease mortality rate is less.

2) WET OR DIPTHERIC FORM =

a) In this form there is formation of yellowish false mucous membrane at the oesophagus area.

b) Due to Dysponea it may lead to death of chicken or birds.

c) In this form there is mortality rate is upto 50%.

d) Dropping of feathers is show in this form .

 

CAUSES AND TREATMENT OF FOWL POX ( AVIAN DIPTHERIA)

 

DIAGNOSIS = We can diagnose this this by symptoms and lesions of chicken and birds.

TREATMENT = There is no treatment of  this disease . only slaughtering of animal is done .

VACCINATION = Fowl or pigeon pox vaccine is give to bird by wing web method . only 2 drops of vaccine is give to birds
DOSE :- 1 ampoule = 100 doses.

IMMUNITY = Immunity of this vaccine is 6 to 8 weeks .
