MILK FEVER ( PARTURIENT PARESUS)

MILK FEVER ( PARTURIENT PARESUS)  DEFINATION = It is an afebrile disease occuring mostly at or soon after parturation manifested by circulatory collapse ,generalized paresis and depression of consciousness . it is due to the deficiency of calcium in animal body

ETIOLOGY =
1 ) Hypocalcaemia such that deficiency of calcium in blood .Normally the level of calcium in the blood is 10 miligram to 100 miligram of blood but in the case of milk fever ,this level of calcium is reduced to 3-7 mg per 100 ml of blood .

2)Sudden onset of profuse lactation of animal

3) Mostly occur in 5-9 years of age of animal

SYMPTOMS = It has three stages of symptoms in animal .

1) stages of excitement  in animal
2)stages of sternal recumbancy  in animal
3)stages of lateral recumbancy in animal

1) stage of excitement =

a) Animal is excited and off feed

b) pupil dilates muscles stiff animal is unable to walk if collapse then the animal is unable to stand due to muscle tremors

c) generally temperature normal but sometimes 103-104 degree F of animal

2)Stage of sternal recumbency =

a) no excitement ,dullness depresses.
b) animal is lying on sternum area.
c) temperature is sub normal such that hypothermia in animal
d) decrease in ruminal moment ( complete anorexia) of animal .
e) the normal respiration and pulse rate is weak of animal .
f) difficulty in giving I/V due to weak pressure of blood in viens.
g)dry muzzle ,cold skin and ear
h)slight blindness,musclesvof anus relax -constipation found in animal .

3)stage of lateral recumbancy =
a) comatose- unconsciousness in animal
b) blood circulation is weak in animal
c) subnormal temprature of animal
d) muscles relax and animal lateral recumbency is happen
e) tympany and death of animal within 12-24 hours if not treated

DIAGNOSIS =
1) By history of animal
(a) milk yield of animal
(b) time of parturation of animal
(c) sudden onset of colostrum / milk of animal .

2) by typical symptoms (all three stages)
3) blood examination of animal

MILK FEVER ( PARTURIENT PARESUS) DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS=

ketosis,metritis, acute indigestion ,gross tetany,traumatic gastritis,pneumonia may also occur as complication in animal

TREATMENT (FIRST AID) OF ANIMAL =
1) calcium preparation – mifex given to animal ,calborol,calcium borogluconate,thiacal etc 450ml half slow I/V and half S/C (repeat after 1-2 hours )

2) In phosphorus deficiency = solid acid phosphate 50-80 gm bid orally to animal
